Amex Platinum HBO Max: The Hidden Benefit Nobody Tells You About
If you search American Express's official list of services covered by the Digital Entertainment Credit, HBO Max isn't there.
Disney+? Yes. Hulu? Yes. Peacock, Paramount+, The New York Times? All listed.
But HBO Max? Nowhere to be found.
Here's the thing: You can still get HBO Max completely free with your Amex Platinum—and most cardholders have no idea.
The HBO Max Loophole
The secret is the Disney Bundle.
American Express covers Disney+ and Hulu with the $25/month Digital Entertainment Credit. And Disney happens to offer a bundle that includes HBO Max:
Disney+ + Hulu + HBO Max for $19.99/month
Your $25 Amex credit covers the entire bundle. HBO Max included.
This isn't a hack or workaround—it's how the benefit actually works. Amex doesn't list HBO Max because they cover Disney subscriptions, and Disney bundles HBO Max. But the result is the same: you get HBO Max for free.
Why This Matters
HBO Max has some of the best premium content available:
- House of the Dragon (Game of Thrones prequel)
- The Last of Us
- Succession
- Warner Bros movies on release day
- The entire DC Universe catalog
- HBO originals (True Detective, The White Lotus, etc.)
If you're paying $16/month for standalone HBO Max, you're leaving money on the table. The Amex Platinum can cover it—you just need to bundle it correctly.
How to Set It Up
Step 0: Enroll in the Digital Entertainment Credit
Important: You must enroll before the benefit works.
- Go to americanexpress.com/benefits
- Sign in to your account
- Find "Digital Entertainment Credit" and click Enroll
You only need to do this once. After enrollment, the $25/month credit applies automatically.
Step 1: Choose the Right Bundle
Go to disneyplus.com and select your Disney Bundle.
You have three main options:
| Bundle | Price | What You Get |
|---|---|---|
| Disney+, Hulu | $12.99/month | Disney+ and Hulu (with ads) |
| Disney+, Hulu, HBO Max | $19.99/month | Disney+, Hulu, HBO Max (all with ads) |
| Disney+, Hulu, ESPN+ | $14.99/month | Disney+, Hulu, ESPN+ (with ads) |
Recommendation: Go with the $19.99 HBO Max bundle if you want premium shows and movies.
Here's why:
- It's fully covered by your $25 credit (you actually have $5 left over)
- HBO Max has the best exclusive content (HBO originals, Warner Bros movies)
- ESPN+ is great for sports fans, but HBO Max has broader appeal
Sports fan? The Disney+/Hulu/ESPN+ bundle ($14.99) is also a solid choice—you get live sports, UFC, and exclusive games. It's $10 cheaper and still uses the same credit.
There's also a no-ads version of the HBO Max bundle for $32.99/month, but that means you'd pay $7.99/month out of pocket. The with-ads version is free.
Step 2: Add Your Amex Platinum as Payment
When you sign up for the Disney Bundle:
- Select Disney+, Hulu, HBO Max ($19.99/month)
- Enter your Amex Platinum as the payment method
- Complete signup
The $25/month Digital Entertainment Credit will automatically apply to your statement. You'll see a charge for $19.99, then a statement credit for $19.99 within a few days.
Step 3: Access All Three Services
Once you're subscribed to the bundle:
- Disney+ - Marvel, Star Wars, Pixar, all Disney content
- Hulu - Current TV shows, FX originals, Hulu exclusives
- HBO Max - HBO originals, Warner Bros movies, Max exclusives
Each service has its own app. Sign in with your Disney Bundle credentials.
What About Peacock and Paramount+?
You might notice Peacock and Paramount+ are listed on Amex's Digital Entertainment Credit page. Don't use your credit on them.
Here's why: The Amex Platinum also includes a $14/month Walmart+ credit. And Walmart+ includes your choice of:
- Peacock Premium (free with Walmart+)
- Paramount+ Essential (free with Walmart+)
If you use your $25 Digital Entertainment Credit on Peacock or Paramount+, you're wasting money. Get one of them free through Walmart+ instead.
The optimal strategy:
- Use your $25 Digital Entertainment Credit → Disney+/Hulu/HBO Max Bundle
- Use your $14 Walmart+ Credit → Peacock OR Paramount+

Why Isn't HBO Max Listed Officially?
Good question. Amex lists the primary services their credit works with—Disney+, Hulu, Peacock, etc. They don't list every possible bundle variation.
HBO Max isn't a "primary" service for the Digital Entertainment Credit. But because Amex covers Disney subscriptions, and Disney bundles HBO Max, it works.
Think of it like this: Amex doesn't advertise "buy Disney gift cards with your credit," but that works too. The credit applies to Disney charges. How you structure those charges is up to you.
Other Ways to Use the $25/Month Credit
If HBO Max isn't your thing, here are other ways to use the Digital Entertainment Credit:
Streaming:
- Disney+/Hulu Bundle (without HBO Max) - $12.99/month
- Disney+/Hulu/ESPN+ Bundle - $14.99/month (great for sports fans)
- Peacock Premium - $8/month (but get this free via Walmart+ instead)
- Paramount+ - $6-12/month (but get this free via Walmart+ instead)
News:
- The New York Times - $17/month
- The Wall Street Journal - varies
Other:
- YouTube Premium - $14/month (no ads, offline downloads, YouTube Music)
The HBO Max bundle is the best value if you want premium shows and movies. But the flexibility is there.
The Math: What You're Actually Getting
Monthly breakdown:
- Disney+/Hulu/HBO Max Bundle: $19.99
- Amex Digital Entertainment Credit: -$25.00
- Your cost: $0 (with $5.01 left over)
Annual value:
- Bundle cost: $19.99 × 12 = $240/year
- What you're paying: $0
If you were paying for HBO Max standalone ($16/month) + Disney+ ($8/month) + Hulu ($8/month) separately, that's $32/month or $384/year. The Amex Platinum saves you the entire amount.
Can You Switch Later?
Yes. Disney lets you change your bundle anytime:
- Want to drop HBO Max and save money? Switch to Disney+/Hulu for $12.99/month
- Want to upgrade to ad-free? Switch to the $32.99 bundle (you'd pay $7.99/month out of pocket)
- Want to swap HBO Max for ESPN+? Switch to Disney+/Hulu/ESPN+ bundle
The credit follows your Disney subscription. Whatever you're subscribed to gets covered (up to $25/month).
Pro Tips
1. Enroll before you subscribe
Don't forget Step 0. If you subscribe to Disney before enrolling in the Digital Entertainment Credit, you'll be charged without getting the credit. Enroll first, then subscribe.
2. Share with your household
Most streaming services allow multiple simultaneous streams:
- Disney+: 4 screens at once
- Hulu: 2 screens at once (unlimited for Hulu + Live TV)
- HBO Max: 3 screens at once
One subscription can cover the whole family.
3. Track your credit
The Digital Entertainment Credit resets on the 1st of each month. If you don't use it, you lose it. Set a calendar reminder to check that your subscription charged.
4. Don't double-pay for Peacock/Paramount+
If you're already paying for Peacock or Paramount+ separately, cancel those and activate them through Walmart+ instead. You're entitled to one or the other for free.
Bottom Line
HBO Max works with the Amex Platinum Digital Entertainment Credit—you just need to bundle it through Disney.
For $19.99/month (fully covered by your $25 credit), you get:
- Disney+ (Marvel, Star Wars, Pixar)
- Hulu (current TV, FX shows)
- HBO Max (HBO originals, Warner Bros movies)
That's $240/year in free streaming, all from one credit card benefit most people underuse.
If you have the Amex Platinum and you're not doing this, you're leaving money on the table.
